Herakles

The Labours of Herakles explores one of the classical world’s most famous heroes through the lithographs and etchings of New Zealand artist Marian Maguire. Taking Herakles out of his ancient context, and portraying him as nineteenth century colonist in New Zealand, these works invite us to question what it means to be a hero.

Marian Maguire is a New Zealand artist whose lithographs and etchings use the visual language of ancient Greek vase painting to examine New Zealand history, in particular narratives concerning early European contact and colonisation of nineteenth century New Zealand. Also on display will be some of Leeds’ collection of Maori objects, as well as ancient Greek and Roman representations of Herakles.

Inspired by the exhibition? Why not get involved with our events programme? All events are free, but some require pre-booking.
